Thanks Louise
I want to say thankyou to Louise for doing the Size Zero show. I've never had an eating disorder, or any particular need to change my body shape, but your show has made me think twice about the way I percieve women. I always thought of this modern weight obessision to be nothing to do with me, but I realise now how deeply ingrained it is into our culture. Even though I've never thought of size 8 and below as anything other than a bad idea, I've always thought of size 10/12 being a good size. It haddn't really occured to me how odd even this is! When did size ten slip into our culture as being almost an accepted target? I remember there being quite a few girls at my school who went down to a size 10/12 from a 14/16 and their looks went with it. They all just had such big personalities it didn't seem like they fitted into a smaller body. And besides, when you watch TV shows about tribes in Africa, in an environment where food is not scare but not plentiful - the guys look fairly slim, and the tribes women tend to be way curvier than women in the west aim to be. Anyway, in a round-about way, I think we've been a bit sleepy and not noticed the effect that this culture has had on us. I think that even 'normal' women who are on the surface, happy with thier bodies secretly think size 10 is a good size EVEN THOUGH they might not necessarily think it's attractive. Of course people's natural weights can be anything from naturally curvy to naturally thin and we need to find a way to accept that. Despite the fact that this comment has mostly focused on accepting larger women, naturally thin women are getting an unfair deal out of this as well.
On the upside, I think that the UK TV shows are actually helping to get us out of this cycle. Shows like 'what not to wear', singing and dancing shows like 'strictly come dancing' and the many documentaries that feature ordinary families are getting us used to seeing ordinary looking people on TV. I may be barking up the wrong dog with this one, but I for one feel much better knowing that these shows are on UK TV rather than the US airbrushed soaps and dramas where everyone is unrealistically thin.
Lastly, is it a bit of a pain when someone writes a comment like this and then it turns out that they are a paranoid size 8/10, so just to let you know that I am size 12-14, sometimes even 16. I hope to have a career in the music industry and to do so without having to change my bodyweight because of it.
Thanks again Louise. What you have done I think will impact not just on those who desire to be superthin, but on every woman in the country.
